In De Staël, the material deposited within its allotted spaces reveals itself as untamed, restless, exuberant, prone to transcending the dividing lines, or accepting them only under duress, and not without tremors and efforts to overcome them. In the paintings of the Russo-French artist, the geometric grid, the contouring of the bodies resists, but barely, the flanks are corroded, and most often circumvented.
