The present study concerns a figure near Yermak in the left half of the monumental painting “The Conquest of Siberia by Yermak Timofeyevich” (285 x 599 cm, 1895, The State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg). The conquest of Siberia in the 16th century was one of the most important events in Russian history. The aforementioned painting is among the most famous works by this great master of history painting from the Russian school. Surikov worked on his preliminary studies for the painting over the course of several years.

Произведение является этюдом фигуры, расположенной в левой части масштабной картины «Покорение Сибири Ермаком» (285 х 599 см, 1895, ГРМ) рядом с Ермаком. Эта картина стала новой вехой в творчестве Сурикова. Собирая материал к ней, художник работал над этюдами в течение нескольких лет.
