Jules Adolphe Goupil, a French painter and etcher, initially focused his work on the execution of portraits. Over the course of his career, he also depicted genre scenes and episodes from the French Revolution. The method deployed in his paintings, with its strong brushstrokes and harmonic colour scheme, proves his artistic accomplishment. The present full figure portrait of the young Thérèse Gerard, who was probably the daughter of a friend, as indicated by the description on the back, was executed in 1882 and exhibited in the Paris Salon in the same year.
Goupil was not only a great success in France: his depictions of episodes from the French Revolution, in particular, also enjoyed a favourable reception in Munich and Brussels.
