The subject of this painting is taken from Ovid’s Heroides (IX, 47-118) and is a pendant of the painting with Ceres, Bacchus and Venus by Giuseppe Danedi (see lot 393). It is a rare example of the secular work of Giovanni Stefano Danedi, known as Montalto, who was one of the most significant painters in late seventeenth-century Lombardy. Another similar composition (178.5 x 233.5 cm) was at Sotheby`s, London, 9 July 2009, as lot 151. The latter differs from this painting in its horizontal format, and depicts Cupid on the left of Hercules, in a lighter colour palette.
