Pacecco de Rosa

Pacecco de Rosa - Old Master Paintings

(Naples 1607–1656)
Madonna della Purità,
oil on panel, tondo, diameter 97 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Naples

We are grateful to Riccardo Lattuada for confirming the attribution after examination of the present painting in the original.

This apparently unpublished work is an important addition to the oeuvre of the artist. The composition derives from the Madonna della Purità by Luis de Morales (Naples, Church of San Paolo Maggiore), which was greatly celebrated in Naples during the seventeenth century.

Lattuada believes the present painting is the finest autograph version of the subject by Pacecco de Rosa. A version is in the church of San Potito, Naples (see V. Pacelli, Giovan Francesco de Rosa detto Pacecco de Rosa. 1607-1656, Naples, ill. no. 89, p. 352); another is in Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, Naples (see Pacelli, ibid., ill. no. 90, pp. 352–353) and a third version is in Pollena Trocchia, Naples, in the church of the Annunziata (see Pacelli, ibid., ill. no. 91, pp. 353–354).

25.04.2017 - 18:00

Estimate:
EUR 40,000.- to EUR 60,000.-
