The present painting is a late work by the artist executed in collaboration with his workshop. The composition derives from a painting that Ciro Ferri signed and dated in 1686: The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine (Rome, Museum of Palazzo Venezia, oval, Inv. P. V. 882, 109 x 85 cm) and is also related to an autograph replica in Vienna (Kunsthistorisches Museum Inv. n. 1579, 111 x 75 cm, oval). However, in the present canvas the artist sets the scene in a landscape, similar to the picture The Expulsion of Hagar, painted around 1685 (Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame, inv. 1988.061).
