The present painting’s landscape setting was painted by Jan Brueghel II, while the figures are by the hand of Pieter van Avont. Jan Brueghel II and Pieter van Avont worked together quite frequently, with Van Avont commonly doing the figural staffage for Brueghel’s landscapes and Brueghel painting the landscape backgrounds for Van Avont’s figural scenes. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, preserves two such collaborative pieces by the artists.

Klaus Ertz confirmed this painting as an autograph work by Jan Brueghel II and Pieter van Avont (22 July 2005). He will include and reproduce the painting in the supplement to his catalogue raisonné on Jan Brueghel II (1984).
