E. Gemar-Koeltzsch writes about Pierson’s works in Lexikon der Holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert: “In his still lifes, Christoffel Pierson pursues an illusionistic rendering of hunting objects. In this, he stylistically emulates the brothers Leemans and the painter Cornelis Brisé, all of whom produced delicately and meticulously executed depictions of hunting paraphernalia attached to a wall. A relatively monochrome palette of ochre and brown tones, and a balanced treatment of light and shadow directed at an imaginary spectator’s vantage point, lend Pierson’s paintings a special trompe-l’oeil effect.”
