Abraham Brueghel - a pair (2)

Abraham Brueghel - a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1631 – circa 1690 Naples)
A pair of flower still lifes with squires,
oil on canvas, each 150 x 122.5 cm, framed, a pair (2)

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Abraham Brueghel.

Abraham Brueghel was the son of Jan Brueghel II. He lived in Rome from 1659 onwards, where he soon became one of the leading still life painters. His superbly decorative still lifes, which were frequently combined with one or several figures, hark back to the works of Mario Nuzzi, Cerquozzi, and Michelangelo Pace. In 1670, Brueghel was admitted to the Academia di San Luca. In 1675 the painter moved to Naples, where he remained for the rest of his life. He had brought with him the monumental style of Roman still life painting, which by that time had reached its acme.
