Lot No. 27

Workshop of Ambrosius Benson

Workshop of Ambrosius Benson - Old Master Paintings

(born circa 1490/1500 - circa 1550 Bruges)
The Madonna and Child in a Rose Garden,
oil on panel, 95 x 73 cm, framed

Provenance:
Collection Eugene Victor Thaw, New York;
Private European collection

The present composition of the Madonna and Child is based on a lost model by Rogier van der Weyden only known from a drawing in the Dresden Collection of Prints and Drawings. The intimate bond between the mother and child inspired painters of the following generation such as Adriaen Isenbrant and Ambrosius Benson. Most of the versions known to date show the figures against a plain, monochrome backdrop, whereas the so-called “Madonna of the Rose Garden” represents a rare and more elaborate variant associated with Ambrosius Benson and his workshop. A variation from Benson’s workshop closely related to the present painting was sold at Dorotheum, Vienna on 20 October 2015, lot 28. The present painting differs from the latter in the details of the rose garden and in the ornaments of the garment.
