Gillis van Coninxloo

Gillis van Coninxloo - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1544–1607 Amsterdam)
A forest landscape with huntsmen and animals,
oil on panel, 49 x 74.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the present painting to be an autograph work by Gillis van Coninxloo. A certificate is available. Ertz writes: “The present painting has survived in very good condition. The dappled leaves with their bright edges, lending a certain lightness to the artist’s altogether dark forests, are typical of Coninxloo and can also be found in the work to be assessed here. They are characteristic of the artist’s period shortly after 1600. A Fleming, the artist emigrated to Frankenthal in 1585 and then to Holland in 1603 for religious reasons.”

With regards to the composition of the forest setting, the present painting is closely related to a work from 1598 in the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Vaduz/Vienna.
