(The Hague 1600–1661 Bergen op Zoom) A palace on a southern harbour promenade in the evening light, monogrammed lower left: GH, oil on panel, 48.8 x 65 cm, framed
As a pupil of Bartholomeus van Bassen, Houckgeest was one of the most important painters of architectural scenes of the Delft School alongside Emanuel de Witte and Hendrick van Vliet. The present painting is a good example of his work. Houckgeest was also active at the residence belonging to the stadtholder in The Hague, where, amongst other things, he designed the important tapestries for the Assembly Hall of the States General. Many of his works are held today at the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
