(Amsterdam 1675–1721) A pair of still lifes with game, one signed in the upper right: D. Valckenburg, oil on canvas, each 71.5 x 58.5 cm, framed (2)
Dirk Valkenburg began his artistic career as a pupil of the animal and still life painter Jan Weenix. In 1696 he left Amsterdam and sojourned for extended periods of time in Augsburg and Vienna.
After returning to his home country, in 1706 he travelled to Surinam to draw its exotic plants and animals at the behest of Jonas Witsen, a plantation owner. A year later he returned to Amsterdam. Valkenburg is known primarily as a painter of still lifes with game, which reveal the influence of his teacher, Weenix. Four of his impressive still lifes are preserved in the collections of the Prince von und zu Liechtenstein in Vienna.
