European Private Collection

Zipp is a bad-boy storyteller. His paintings and installations have been described as the “heavy metal of the art world: transgressive, blackly comic.” He tells stories about atomic fission, eccentrics, and historical personalities, celebrating “the weirdness of mankind … I mean – take a scientist – their whole life is, you know, splitting atoms. And their whole life is sacrificed for that idea, you know?” This makes him laugh. “And they never really know where it’s going.”
Zipp’s paintings have been described as having a vintage aura, since the artist favors umbers, grays, and greens, “as if just exhumed from the cellar of a forgotten avant-garde artist.” This palette is appropriate for an artist who is interested in things like psychophysics, the relationship between physical stimuli, and the sensations and perceptions they affect. As one journalist has said, for Zipp, “painting is a lot like taking drugs – they both suck you in and open you up to new points.”
