Lot No. 149 -

Gerhard Richter *

(born Dresden in 1932) "Schiff" (Ship), colour offset print on thin card, after his own photograph of a toy ship, signed and dated Richter 1972, stamped verso: Schulprinte Nordrhein-Westfalen, 3. Folge, 1972, image size 49.9 x 65 cm, image size 40.3 x 57.7 cm, mounted, Butin/Gronert 47, (EW)

“Initially, as in this work, Richter used amateur photos taken from an atlas or family album. Although most of these works are black and white, Richter applied (…) colour as early as his second edition of prints, although the source photo used for this print (…) is itself monochrome. It is interesting that each print is different, and thus reminiscent of Warhol’s colour variations on a motif (e.g. Marilyn).)” (From: Stefan Gronert, Bild-(Re) Produktionen, in: Gerhard Richter. Edition 1965-2004, published by Hatje Cantz, Ostfildern-Ruit 2004).

This print is Richter’s contribution to a series of art prints commissioned by the Ministry of Education in North Rhine Westphalia.
