The oeuvre of the deaf-mute artist Maerten Boelema belongs to the group of so-called ‘monochromatic’ still lifes, a genre that had been developed from the 1630s onwards in Haarlem by Pieter Claesz. and Willem Claesz. Heda. The pictures of this genre can be divided into “ontbijtjes” (breakfasts) and “banketjes” (banquets). Objects are depicted in plain, harmonious arrangements on a table and rendered in a limited, tonal palette. Boelema, who joined Heda’s workshop in Haarlem in 1642, inherited his master’s sense of creating seemingly simple, yet highly sophisticated arrangements of more or less precious objects. There is no room for coincidence in these compositions; everything is subject to the painter’s masterful handling of perspective and technical skills in rendering the various surface textures.
