This impressive painting depicts Isabel II of Spain’s victory over the Moroccans at Tétouan.
The battle took place on 22 October 1859, close to the city of Tétouan in Morocco.
The Spanish army secured victory on 26 April 1860.
Antonio Ermolao Paoletti painted this large-scale painting to glorify the victory of Isabel II of Spain (1830–1904). It represents an interesting historical moment. She wears the Collar of the Royal Spanish Order of the Golden Fleece. The white ermine fur reinforces the image of the monarch.
In her left hand she holds the Spanish flag. The lion represents the Spanish victory.
