Palatine Court Painter, 18th Century
Portrait of Electress Palatine Elizabeth Augusta (1721–1794) as Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia,
oil on canvas, 86.5 x 70.5 cm, framed
The present painting comes with a certificate issued by Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin. In 1766 the electress founded the Order of Saint Elizabeth, which was only bestowed on noble ladies, in order to commemorate her namesake, Elizabeth of Thuringia. A painting dated 1745 in the Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg shows the electress at a juvenile age giving alms to a beggar. The present painting seems to have been made in continuation of the latter.
