(Bern (?)
1791-1842 Berlin)
Siblings (members of the Rohde family of Berlin merchants), signed, dated, F. W. Herdt 1829, oil on canvas, 134 x 109.5 cm, framed, (Rei)
Friedrich Wilhelm Herdt was the son of a Berlin acting family, and enjoyed a wide-ranging education which placed him within the circle of Berlin’s court theatre at a young age. After his artistic training at the Berlin Academy, Herdt quickly advanced to become the favourite portraitist of this milieu. As well as frequently portraying eminent members of Berlin’s theatre world, the works in his surviving oeuvre include portraits of artists and the nobility, members of the Prussian royal family, actors, singers, and dancers, often depicted in the roles they played. His paintings exhibit a representative and elegance classicism, entirely lacking the Biedermeier-like cosiness of Berlin’s other contemporary portraitists.
