B. Dorival published the present painting as an autograph work in his 1976 Catalogue Raisonné of the works by Philippe de Champaignes with the number 124 (see literature). Further versions of this composition were sold on 22 March 1991 by Binoche & Godeau, Paris, lot 9, and on 19 June 2007 at Sotheby’s, Paris, lot 4 (Studio of Philippe de Champaigne). It has been assumed that the present painting was identical to the one auctioned in 1991, which must be ruled out because of differences in the provenance.
