The present painting is an imaginative interpretation of Cortona’s ceiling decoration in the Gran Salone of the Palazzo Barberini, Rome.
We are grateful to Nicholas Turner for tentatively suggesting an attribution to Livio Mehus after examining the present painting in the original. The lively brushwork and the luminous painterly effects against a maroon-brown background are typical of Mehus’s handling. He was remarkably proficient as a copyist and in his youth he seemed to have been employed by Cortona to furnish reduced replicas of the master’s work as modelli for the printmaker.
