The composition of the present painting relates to a work by Carlo Maratti, documented by a drawing The Toilette of Venus (Witt Collection, Courtauld Institute of Art, London, inv. 208) and a painting sold at Sotheby’s in London, 12 December 1990 (lot 61). The present work may have been executed by a pupil of Maratti and an attribution to Francesco Mancini has been suggested.
