Workshop of Andrea Sabatini, called Andrea da Salerno

Workshop of Andrea Sabatini, called Andrea da Salerno - Old Master Paintings

(Salerno c. 1480–1530/1 Gaeta)
The Transfiguration,
oil on panel, 164 x 120 cm, framed

Provenance:
Francesco Santangelo (1754-1836) collection, Naples, 1876, no. 98 (as Andrea Sabatini);
thence by descent;
Private European collection

The present painting was created in the workshop of Andrea da Salerno, who was heavily influenced by Raphael’s Roman works and became the most important proponent of his style in southern Italy. The figure to the lower left is comparable to the Saint Peter in the triptych at the church of San Francesco in Nocera (see Andrea da Salerno nel Rinascimento meridionale, ed. G. Previtali, exhibition catalogue, Padula (Salerno) 1986, p 140-141, no. 24). The profile of the second figure recalls a figure in Santa Maria di Costantinopoli (Salerno, Museo del Duomo; see Andrea da Salerno, ibid., 1986, p 52).

Some parts of the compostion may be by Giovan Filippo Criscuolo (Gaeta 1500–1584 Napoli), who was employed in the workshops of Andrea da Salerno at Montecassino and Gaeta in circa 1530.
