Head of an Apostle,
oil on canvas, 58.5 x 42.5 cm, framed
The interesting half-length figure of an Apostle may be identified with Saint James, as he holds the pilgrim’s staff and wears the cloak which are both typical attributes of the Saint. The painting is stylistically close to the works of Battistello Caracciolo. A comparison may be found with the painting The Calling of Saint Matthew, in Matthiesen Gallery in London, published by Stefano Causa (see S. Causa, Battistello Caracciolo: l’opera completa, Napoli 2000, p. 201, no. A103, p. 305, fig. 307) but the rendering of the light, the white brushstrokes appear closer to a Caravaggesque French master.
