Chiemsee from the East near Chieming with Approaching Storm, signed Haushofer, oil on canvas, 69 x 95 cm, framed, (Rei)
Maximilian Haushofer is regarded as “the painter of Chiemsee ” (Thieme-Becker). The landscape painter walked from Munich to Chiemsee in 1828 and, according to legend, was ferried across to the Fraueninsel. He returned to Munich in raptures, enthusing about the tranquility, the pristine surroundings, and the rich source of motifs. Just a short time later Haushofer returned to the lake with other painters, marking the beginning of the artists’ colony at Frauenchiemsee of which Haushofer is credited with being the founder. From then onwards this circle of painters focused mainly on painting en plein air – two years before founding of the Barbizon school in France.
