The present painting by Carl Ernst Koerner depicts an Oriental landscape in the evening light. The artist undertook study trips to Spain, France, Italy and England, as well as to Egypt and the Orient. In accordance with contemporary taste, his repertoire included motifs taken from foreign worlds. The Orient was hugely fascinating for 19th century artists and this was reflected in their work. Paintings of the Orient exhibit an uneasy relationship with the ambivalence between the colourful life of the markets and the barrenness of the desert.
