Julius Adam

Julius Adam - 19th Century Paintings

(Munich 1852–1913)
Four Kittens and Crayfish, signed Jul. Adam, oil on canvas, 22.5 x 33.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Julius Adam was a descendent of the widely branching Adam family of artists from Munich. Although initially rejecting the family tradition of animal painting to focus on genre scenes. From 1882 onwards he dedicated himself almost entirely to renditions of animals, especially cats. Thieme-Becker writes of Julius Adam: “After leaving the Academy in 1882 he dedicated himself to animal painting, and it was the domestic cat which found its most masterly depiction in his works, so much so that he can now be regarded as Germany’s foremost painter of cats.” His apposite sobriquet, the Raphael of cats, had established itself during the artist’s lifetime, and his paintings continue to enjoy popularity worldwide. Julius Adam’s huge success lies in the technical brilliance of his execution, paired with his deep intuition of the feline character, often giving rise to anthropogenic associations.
