Thomas Ender was the son of the dawdler Johann Ender and the twin brother of the history painter Johann Nepomuk Ender. He was born in Vienna and entered the Vienna Academy in 1806 where he studied history painting with Hubert Maurer. In 1810 he changed to the landscape class of Laurenz Jansch at whose death Joseph Mößmer became his teacher. After several study trips Ender was awarded the “Große Malerpreis” (Grand painters’ prize). Duke Clemens Metternich acquired the awarded painting and the artist became his protégé. He participated in the Austrian Brazil expedition, then he travelled to Rome. On his return in 1823 Ender was active in the Salzkammergut by order of Metternich. Then he was appointed “Kammermaler” (court painter) by Archduke Johann and participated in his trip to the Orient- and Russia. From 1837 to 1851 Ender was professor of landscape painting at the Vienna Academy and from 1855 to 1857 he again travelled to Italy.
