Georges Desmarées

Georges Desmarées - Old Master Paintings

(Gimo 1697–1776 Munich)
Portrait of Count Gotthelf Adolf of Hoym (1731–1783)
oil on canvas, 85.5 x 68.1 cm, framed

Provenance:
Princes of Schönburg-Waldenburg, Guteborn Castle, Brandenburg

We are grateful to Helmut Börsch-Supan for confirming the attribution of the present painting (written communication).

Two portraits by Desmarées that were probably commissioned as a pair appeared on the art market recently. One of them was the present painting, while the other was the portrait of Count Hoym’s sister, Christiane Caroline Countess Vitzthum of Eckstädt, the wife of the Saxon envoy to Munich (remains of a signature make this latter painting an incontestable work by the hand of Desmarées).

Gotthelf Adolf Count of Hoym, the lord of numerous estates, including Droyßig and Guteborn, was an Electoral-Saxon politician, privy councillor, and delegated minister to the Viennese court. The last member of the Saxon line of the Hoym family, he left no male heirs. From his marriage to Countess Sophie Augusta of Stolberg-Roßla, his only daughter Henrietta emerged as his sole heiress; she married Count Henry LI Reuß of Ebersdorf.
