Friederike Lisiewski was a member of an important family of artists and one of the daughters of Christoph Friedrich Lisiewski, a court painter in Dessau and Ludwigslust. Having received a bursary from the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, she went to Berlin, where she became a student of Christian Bernhard Rode in 1792. In 1793 she was admitted to the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts. Until 1810 and again between 1838 and 1840 she took part in the Berlin Academy’s exhibitions. Another self-portrait by Friederike Julie Lisiewski, which she painted in 1820, is conserved at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.
