Jan Cossiers

Jan Cossiers - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1600–1671)
David and Abigail
signed lower centre: J. Cossiers
oil on canvas, 164 x 226 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium;
sale, Kunsthaus Lempertz, Cologne, 12th May 2012, lot 1268;
Private collection, Germany

The attribution of the present painting has been confirmed by Hans Vlieghe. After his apprenticeship with Cornelis de Vos, Jan Cossiers sojourned in Aix-en-Provence in 1623-24. From there he travelled to Rome, where he stayed for a period of two years and developed a style informed by Caravaggism. In 1628, Cossiers returned to Antwerp, where he modified his style under the influence of Rubens. The present painting is closely related to a composition by Rubens of the same subject (1625-28), now in the Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit. In Antwerp, Cossiers became a renowned artist; he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1628 and elected its chairman in 1639-40. He repeatedly collaborated with Rubens, such as in the series of paintings for the Torre de La Parada near Madrid, a commission that was so extensive that Rubens was not able to cope with it all by himself.
