Circle of Jan van den Hoecke

Circle of Jan van den Hoecke - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1611–1651)
The Holy Family with the Infant Baptist
oil on canvas, laid down on panel, 172 x 145 cm, framed

Provenance:
G. Peters Collection, Venlo (1936, as Gerard Seghers);
European Private Collection

Literature:
J.-P. de Bruyn, Erasmus Quellinus II, Freren, 1988, pp. 116/17, under no. 30, fig. 30/1 (as ‘workshop of Erasmus Quellinus’)

J.-P. de Bruyn published the present painting as a work by Erasmus Quellinus II on the basis of an inadequate photograph and later revised his opinion and assigned the picture to the oeuvre of Gerard Seghers, with possible participation from the artist’s workshop. Hans Vlieghe, for whose support we are grateful, has attributed the painting to the circle of Jan van den Hoecke on the basis of a photograph.
