Giuseppe Simonelli
(Naples 1650–1710)
Massacre of the Innocents
oil on canvas, 126.8 x 180.4 cm, framed
We are grateful to Riccardo Lattuada for confirming the attribution after examining the present painting in the original.
Giuseppe Simonelli was one of the most important pupils of Luca Giordano. Certain elements of the present composition bear a resemblance to the Massacre of the Innocents, executed for the Church of the Annunziata in Antwerp, and to the relative bozzetto in a private collection (see M. C. Paoluzzi, Su Giuseppe Simonelli pittore e restauratore (1649-1710), in: Abruzzo. Il Barocco negato, ed. by R. Torlontano, Rome 2010, p. 231, figg. 9-10). The cycle of Antwerp, formed by twenty eight paintings, is the most celebrated work of the artist, executed between 1702 and 1703 with his brother’s assistance.
