Monogrammist P. W.
(active in the 17th Century)
Interior with figures
oil on canvas, 62.5 x 85 cm, framed
The present painting is a typical work by the Monogrammist P.W., probably identifiable as Pieter Willemsz. (circa 1593 - after 1650). There are several works of the Master that show very similar interiors and an analogous manner of painting. The present canvas bears a strong resemblance to Hall of a palace with a table and figures (Christie’s, New York, 12th January 1996, lot. 4), Portrait of a couple in an interior (Sotheby’s, London, 11th December 1996, lot. 113) and Hall of palace with a table (Christie’s, London, 10th December 1993, lot. 213). The very fine highlights on the wall-panels and the beams on the ceiling in particular are characteristic of P.W.’s hand.
