We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present painting.
This still life is one of the rare works by Thomas Mertens and was previously unknown to Fred Meijer.
Mertens, who was active in Antwerp in the 1660s, was clearly influenced by Jan Davidsz. de Heem. Sometimes he even copied the latter’s paintings, such as in the case of a still life from the Weldon Collection that was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, on 22nd April 2015, lot 11.
