Collection Baron Eric d’Huart, Brussels (1997)

Literature:
L’Eventail, December 1990 / January 1991 (as “attributed to François Hubert Drouais”);
P. Swimberghe/J. Verlinde, Living in Brussels, Tielt 1997, pp. 50–55, ill. p. 54;
The World of Interiors, London, August, 2000, ill. p. 101

We are grateful to Jean-Jacques Petit for confirming the attribution of the present painting.

In the 1730s, Voiriot studied at the Académie de Saint-Luc in Paris and in 1746 enrolled at the Académie de France in Rome. In 1749 he returned to France via Turin, where he painted several portraits for the court. Back in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon of the Académie de Saint-Luc, which was held for the guild of painters and sculptors. Although Voiriot initially preferred to work in pastel, he also began painting in oil from the late 1740s onwards. In the late 1750s, Voiriot’s portraits of the painters Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre and Jean-Marc Nattier led to his admission to the Académie Royale. The present portrait seamlessly fits in with the rest of Voiriot’s oeuvre. Characteristic features of his art are the natural elegance and skilfully captured spontaneity of his sitters’ expressions.
