The name of the “Master of the Female Half-Lengths” derives from a large number of paintings attributed to the artist that feature female half-length figures. Mostly conceived as individual portraits, these pictures show elegantly dressed female figures often depicted while reading or making music.
The unknown master can therefore almost be called a genre painter who complied with the growing interest in the secular world and produced a series of almost identical paintings for private collectors. Stylistically, the master’s works are related to those of Adriaen Isenbrant and Ambrosius Benson.
