Edward Theodor Compton
(London 1849-1921 Feldafing) A motif from the Bernese Oberland: Altenalp against Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn, titled and dated Altenalp, Schweiz 1875 on the reverse, monogrammed E. T. C., watercolor on paper, 31 x 47 cm, mounted, framed, (Hu)
Edward Theodor Compton was an English Alpine painter and a mountain climber. In 1863 he began with his first nature studies and attended various Englich art schools, even the Royal Academy in London for a brief period of time, before he continued to teach himself. From his age of 18 years on he lived with his family in Germany. He became famous for his more than 1700 impressing and precise mountain motifs which he executed in watercolors or pen- and brush drawings. Even his early works demonstrate how carefully he rendered light and brightness. Particularly striking is the way how he applied the vague techniques of the different media for the depiction of water and air or for rising haze and fog in order to render the particularities and the temporary moods of landscapes.
