Jacob Alt

Jacob Alt - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Frankfurt / Main 1789-1872 Vienna) Rome seen from the Passegiata Margerita, the reverse dated 3. Juni 1835 and with a caption: "Rom vom nördlichen Thore des Janiculus (Gianicolo) aus, Jakob Alt 1835, rechts oben die Acqua Paola, links vor ihr S. Pietro in Montorio, ganz links Capitolsthurm und Aracoeli", signed and dated J. Alt 1835, watercolor on paper, 26,5 x 45 cm, paperstrips added at right and left edges, mounted, framed, (Hu)

In the spring of 1835 Jacob Alt and his son Rudolf traveled to Italy by order of Emperor Ferdinand I. Both worked on a series of Guckkasten pictures. "... Vater und Sohn müssen tatsächlich einen "Höhenflug" erlebt haben. Rudolf produzierte die besten Arbeiten in einer seiner zahlreichen "Stilstufen", für Jakob Alt bedeutet diese Entwicklung den Höhepunkt seines Schaffens. Freier und malerischer konnte er nicht mehr werden. Es sind dies Werke, in denen sich Vater und Sohn am nächsten stehen... sie gelangen von der reinen Vedute zur Stadtlandschaft." (“...indeed father and son must have experienced an enormous artistic success. Rudolf produced the best works in one of his several stylistic stages; for Jacob this development meant the climax of his work. He could not get freer and more painterly. These are works where father and son got closest.... they proceeded from mere veduta to townscape”) (Marie-Luise Sternath, Rudolf von Alt, exh. cat. Albertina, Vienna 2005, p. 121f.)
