In the spring of 1835 Jacob Alt and his son Rudolf traveled to Italy by order of Emperor Ferdinand I. Both worked on a series of Guckkasten pictures. "... Vater und Sohn müssen tatsächlich einen "Höhenflug" erlebt haben. Rudolf produzierte die besten Arbeiten in einer seiner zahlreichen "Stilstufen", für Jakob Alt bedeutet diese Entwicklung den Höhepunkt seines Schaffens. Freier und malerischer konnte er nicht mehr werden. Es sind dies Werke, in denen sich Vater und Sohn am nächsten stehen... sie gelangen von der reinen Vedute zur Stadtlandschaft."
