Provenance: Private Collection, Austria.
The present drawing is a detail study for the executioner in the painting „Golgatha“ (Oil on canvas, 460 x 712 cm) by Munkacsy of 1883/84 in the Pákh collection, USA. The same collection also preserves an oil sketch for the same figure (oil on canvas, 85 x 63,5 cm). However, the indication of space in the background and the figures behind the ladder, which also appear in the painting, are missing in the study in the United States.
