The "Academie de l'Espée", published in Antwerp in 1628 by Girard Thibault, is a richly illustrated fencing manual which is the most comprehensive work of its type. The preparation of the copperplates took several years and was carried out by 16 engravers. Thibault‘s fencing school was based on the techniques of the Spanish school "La Verdadera Destrezza", whence he developed complex geometrical figures such as the "Cercle mysterieux".
