Lot No. 41

A rare tea and coffee service,

designed by Zaha Hadid, 1997, for Sawaya & Moroni, marketed in 2008, Sterling silver, gold plated, marked: 1/10-2008, four parts: a coffeepot (height 26.9 cm), a teapot (height 25.7 cm), a milk jug (height 19.2 cm), and a tea caddy (height 9.8 cm), hinged covers, all parts marked: 925 SAWAYA MORONI (DRAX)

No. 1 from the limited edition of 10. In unused condition. All parts in original packaging.

Lit.:
cf. Zaha Hadid: Architektur/Architecture, MAK, Vienna 2003, p. 172 – Z. Hadid, P. Schumacher, G. Fontana-Giusti, Zaha Hadid, Complete Works, New York 2004, p. 14, pp. 218/219 – P. Jodidio, Hadid: Complete Works, Cologne 2009, p. 220 (similar examples in silver)

Fitting into one another, the coffeepot, teapot, and sugar form a whole, similar to a three-dimensional puzzle. The form changes, depending on whether the service is being used or not. In the “presentational mode” it is a compact structure that can easily be carried around. Formally, the shape is based on the idea of combining extremely vertical and extremely horizontal elements and contrasting them with one another. The teapot shows a wide, flat, and organic shape, whereas the coffeepot rises up from this “landscape” like a tower. In the “functional mode”, the objects are turned around and tilted. Each form is facetted in such a way that it can be canted along its axis. Thus the spouts are exposed, which results in an entirely new composition.
