"To me, this photograph symbolises Charing Cross Road. At the time, Foyles was the largest bookstore in London. It filled two buildings, a fitting background for this reading gentleman.”
Although these photographs were only published in book form almost 50 years after they had been taken, the Charing-Cross series is quite famous. Himself born into a family of bookdealers and publishers, the artist took these photographs of London’s book district back in the 1930ies… (from the publication cited above)
