Ein Gespräch mit Dorothee Golz

SBV: I’d also like to discuss your ‘panel paintings’, which I believe are made in a complicated process?

DG: I never wanted to paint on canvas because I’m not a painter and am not interested in painting. I wanted to find a support that has qualities similar to paper and lends a powerful presence to my drawings. For me, the support material is not a means to an end – it is significant by itself and should be recognised. This, I guess, betrays my ambitions as a sculptor. After long experiments I finally found these ‘panels’, which are curved along the edges. They are reminiscent of cushions and carry several layers of priming.

SBV: To me these panels seem more like walls and less like paper?

DG: This is also an important issue, as I don’t feel comfortable with the limitations of space, including those of a piece of canvas or a sheet of paper. What I seek to achieve is that my works radiate into the surrounding space and take hold of it, even if they are only two-dimensional drawings. This is how I ended up with these wall drawings, in which I allow the wall to become part of my work. The fact that the drawings, which are directly attached to the wall, respond to the semi-circular curves enables me to create a dialogue between plastic and graphic elements. These works have no limits, but correspond with everything else that might be found on the walls…
