Strollers in the park of the Villa d’Este at Tivoli,
oil on canvas, 61,6 x 105,4 cm, framed
Literature:
L. Salerno, Pittori di Paesaggio del Seicento a Roma, Rome 1976, p 460–465, ill. p 455, No. 74.5;
M. Roethlisberger, Ein Beitrag zu Johann Wilhelm Baur als Maler, in: Pantheon, XLIV, Munich 1986, p 57, with ill;
M. Roethlisberger, Johann Wilhelm Baur, Beiträge zu seinem malerischen Werk, in: Pantheon, XLVI, 1988, p 6774
This view of the park of the Villa d’Este is one of a group of approximately twenty paintings which Marcel Roethlisberger was able to attribute to Baur. The paintings stylistically fit the œuvre of Baur, who is mainly known as a miniature painter and draughtsman. A very similar version of this composition has likewise been published as a work by Baur, by Luigi Salerno (L. Salerno, I Pittori di Vedute in Italia 1580–1830, Rome 1991, p 65f., cat. 32.2). We are grateful to Marcel Roethlisberger, who already published the painting in 1986, for his renewed confirmation of Baur’s authorship.
