Workshop of Jan Kupezky

Workshop of Jan Kupezky - Old Master Paintings

(Bösing 1666–1740 Nürnberg)
Portrait of the painter David Hoyer (1667–1720), as a musician in a studio,
oil on canvas, 94 x 75 cm, framed

Provenance:
Collection Freiherr von Boltog;
Collection Curt Schmidt-Polex (1888–1956), Frankfurt/Main;
South German aristocratic collection

Literature:
E. Safarik, Johann Kupezky, Ein Meister des Barockporträts, exh. cat. Aachen, 2001/2002, p 74, at No. 19 (with ill.)

The present painting is a workshop copy of a Kupezky painting of ca. 1711/12, today in the collection of Barons Speck von Sternburg at the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig. The subject of this portrait, David Hoyer, an occasional collaborator of Kupezky, was himself a successful portrait painter. The Schmidt-Polex Collection, from which this painting comes, originally had another four portraits of musicians by Kupezky, suggesting the present painting may have been part of a wider iconographic context revolving around the theme of music.
