We are grateful to Francesco Frangi for confirming the attribution after inspecting the painting in the original.
The present painting is a late work by this painter, probably dating to the 18th century. The composition is comparable to the Descent into Limbus at Villa Gallia in Como (cf. Paolo Pagani 1655-1716, ed. F. Bianchi, exh. cat. Milano 1998, p 134-135, No. 17) and to the two paintings with scenes from the life of St Anthony, dated 1714, for the church of Santa Maria del Giardino in Milan, today at Uggiate Trevano (cf. Paolo Pagani… ibid., 1998, p 166-167, No. 30a, 30b).
