Jacob van der Kerckhoven, called Giacomo da Castello - Old Master Paintings

(Amsterdam ca. 1640 – after 1712 Venice)
Still life with a parrot, guinea fowl, and guinea pigs,
oil on canvas, 67 x 120,5 cm, framed

Provenance:
European private collection;
Dorotheum sale, Vienna, 7th April 2006, Lot 35 (with matching lot);
Dorotheum sale, Vienna, 16th April 2008, Lot 259

Literature:
F. Zeri, La Natura Morta in Italia, Milano 1989, p 360, No. 425

This period of Kerckhoven’s œuvre is no longer overshadowed by the early influence of his teacher, the animal painter Jan Fyt, but rather informed by the precise study of individual animals, as is generally the case in the compositions of his middle period. The informal placement of the birds in the landscape are more reminiscent of the Florentine animal painter Bartolomeo Bimbi.
