The Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand,

Dorotheum auction, Vienna, 19th October 1993, Lot 152;

The present painting was evidently influenced by the Dürer woodcut of ca. 1498 on the same subject, but also by the 1508 Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The Roman general Acatius and his ten thousand soldiers who converted to Christianity are said to have suffered martyrdom under the emperor Hadrian. The lower left shows the emperor next to his advisor, behind him is St Acatius.
