Henri Millot

Henri Millot - Old Master Paintings

(Paris ? – 1756)
Portrait of an artist (a self-portrait?),
oil on canvas, 119.5 x 92 cm, framed

We are grateful to Jean Jacques Petit, C.P.D.H.S. (Conservatoire du Portrait Dix-Huitième Siècle) for suggesting the attribution on the basis of a digital photograph.

Little is known about the life of Henri Millot, apart from the fact that he was a pupil of Nicolas de Largilliere before 1699. The influence of his master is evident in the present painting which is possibly a self-portrait. Millot was most probably part of Largilliere’s social circle, given that he signed the marriage certificate of the latter’s cousin in 1711.

After a stay in Munich around 1721-1724, from where he executed the Portrait of Duke Gustav-Adolf von Zweibrücken (1722, Schloss Schleissheim), he moved to Strasbourg, and seems to have returned to Paris, where he exhibited two portraits in the Salon de l‘Académie de Saint-Luc in 1756.
